Guinness releases wacky videogame records

LONDON - The most perfect virtual bowler, the most swearing in a videogame and the most popular game on Facebook are just some of the records listed in the 2011 gamer's bible of wacky achievements from Guinness World Records.

The new Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer's Edition published on Thursday features an array of record holders from pensioners to schoolchildren, demonstrating the extent to which people from all walks of life have embraced videogames.

"Gaming has become a hugely important part of popular culture and this year's Gamer's Edition reflects just that," said Guinness World Records Gaming Editor Gaz Deaves.

The oldest gamer to make the book is 85-year-old John Bates from Onalaska, Wisconsin. The former high school principal became hooked on Nintendo's Wii Bowling and went on to achieve the Most Perfect Games on Wii Sports Bowling (2,850).

At the other end of the age spectrum is nine-year-old Ryota Wada from Tokyo, who has been recognized as the Youngest Gamer to Achieve a Perfect 'AAA' score on music videogame Dance Dance Revolution.

Mitsugu Kikai, 25, from Tokyo is recognized for having the largest collection of memorabilia related to videogame character Super Mario (5,400 individual items) and Annie Leung from San Francisco is featured for achieving the highest score on Guitar Hero 3 for a female (789,349 points).

Other records include the most swearing in a videogame, the most people to sing to a karaoke videogame and the most popular game on Facebook, which is FarmVille with 60 million monthly active users.

The book also contains the results of a poll conducted by Guinness World Records to find the best videogame character.

More than 13,000 gaming fans voted and chose Mario, the good-natured moustachioed Italian plumber as the top character.

Second spot went to Link from the popular Legend of Zelda series, and third went to the genetically engineered super soldier, Master Chief, who made his first appearance a decade ago in Halo: Combat Evolved (Microsoft, 2001). (report from Paul Casciato, Reuters)

Pinay makes it to 'Business in Vancouver Forty under 40'

VANCOUVER - A Filipina nurse made it to “Business in Vancouver 2010 Forty under 40” list, a recognition of British Columbia's up and coming business stars for more than 20 years.

Marilyn Senador was a former nurse at the Vancouver General Hospital who came to Canada in 1999.

After working for more than 5 years, she saw a business opportunity for patients needing care even after they were discharged.

She then set up Saltgrass Health Incorporated, which provides nursing care to hospitals, nursing homes, seniors’ facilities and private residents.

Senador has also established 2 group homes for people with brain injuries.

The Pinay nurse also volunteered at the Multicultural Helping House Society during her free time.

The awards night will happen on February 1, 2011. (report from Marieton Pacheco, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau)

Winfrey promises to spill family secret Monday

LOS ANGELES – Oprah Winfrey has staged many a family reunion on her talk show. But on Monday's episode, she promises, the drama will be about her.

Winfrey told viewers Thursday that she will have a reunion of her own on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." She wouldn't say with whom — only that it involves something she's learned about recently and is known to only a few people close to her.

"I thought I'd seen it all. But this, my friends, is the miracle of all miracles," Winfrey says in a promotional spot for the show. The word "miracle" appears on screen, reinforcing her pronouncement.

"I was given some news that literally shook me to my core. This time, I'm the one being reunited," she said. "I was keeping a family secret for months, and on Monday you're going to hear it straight from me."

Her production company, Harpo, declined to provide further details Friday.

Given Winfrey's tangled family history, the possibilities for her reunion are many.

She was born to unmarried teenagers, Vernon Winfrey and Vernita Lee, and raised at various times by a grandmother, her mother, and her father and stepmother in Mississippi, Wisconsin and Tennessee, according to Winfrey and various biographies.

However, Kitty Kelley's unauthorized 2010 biography of Winfrey alleges that Vernon Winfrey isn't Oprah's biological father. Kelley also claims that she discovered the actual father's identity but was keeping it secret until Winfrey learns the truth herself.

As a teenager, Oprah Winfrey gave birth to a son who died shortly afterward. That chapter of her life was revealed after a family member sold the story to a tabloid in 1990, and Winfrey was said to have felt betrayed.

Using her Chicago-based show to disclose a new wrinkle in her personal history allows her to keep other media from getting hold of it first.

Winfrey has proved herself a master at milking family reunion drama, celebrity and otherwise, on her syndicated talk show that's in its 25th and final season. This month, she launched a cable channel, OWN.

She reunited more than 100 members of the Osmonds. She brought together both the screen family from "The Sound of Music" and descendants of the real-life members of the musical Von Trapp family portrayed in the film. After decades apart, singer Seal and his foster sister were reunited on Winfrey's show.

There was also the memorable reunion involving Clemantine and Claire Wamariya, sisters who escaped the Rwandan genocide and later immigrated to America without knowing if their parents had survived. They learned they had, but it wasn't until they were onstage with Winfrey that the sisters saw their mother and father again. (report from AP / GMANews.tv)

Google targets spam-laden websites

SAN FRANCISCO — Google on Friday said it has made it harder for spam-packed websites to rank high in results at the world's top Internet search engine.

While the amount of "webspam" in query results is less than half of what it was five years ago, the California-based Internet firm has seen a "slight uptick" in recent months, according to Google principal engineer Matt Cutts.

"Webspam is junk you see in search results when websites try to cheat their way into higher positions in search results or otherwise violate search engine quality guidelines," Cutts explained in a blog post.

"We recently launched a redesigned document-level classifier that makes it harder for spammy on-page content to rank highly."

The new classifier better detects words or phrases typical of "junky, automated, self-promoting" comments repeated on pages at spam websites, according to the engineer.

Google also "radically improved" its ability to detect when legitimate websites have been tainted by hackers in the kinds of attacks that were a major source of spam last year, according to Cutts.
Other spam-fighting tactics being considered at Google include identifying websites laden with content copied from elsewhere on the Internet, he added.

Cutts stressed that having Google-powered ads on pages did not elevate them in search results or bar websites from repercussions of violating quality guidelines. (report from Agence France-Presse / Inquirer.net)

Facebook raises $1.5 billion, valued at $50 billion

SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook announced Friday that it had raised $1.5 billion from investors in a private share offering that valued the booming social network at approximately $50 billion.

"Our business continues to perform well, and we are pleased to be able to bolster our cash position with this new financing," Facebook chief financial officer David Ebersman said in a statement.

"With this investment completed, we now have greater financial flexibility to explore whatever opportunities lie ahead."

Facebook said US investment bank Goldman Sachs completed an oversubscribed offering to its non-US clients in a fund that invested $1 billion in Facebook Class A common stock.

Russia's Digital Sky Technologies, The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., and funds managed by Goldman Sachs meanwhile invested $500 million in Facebook Class A common stock at the same $50 billion valuation.

Facebook also said it expected to surpass the ceiling of 500 shareholders sometime this year and would start filing public financial reports no later than April 30, 2012.

US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) rules require firms with 500 or more shareholders of record in a given type of stock to publicly disclose certain financial information.

Facebook, the world's top social network with nearly 600 million members, said it had "no immediate plans" for the newly raised funds, indicating it "will continue investing to build and expand its operations."

Earlier this week, Goldman Sachs, citing "intense media coverage," said it was excluding US clients from the private offering of shares in Facebook.

"Goldman Sachs concluded that the level of media attention might not be consistent with the proper completion of a US private placement under US law," it said.

US securities law bars public promotion of private offerings and the Facebook deal reportedly attracted the SEC's attention.

Facebook has been in the spotlight since US media revealed earlier this month that Goldman had invested $450 million in the company, alongside a $50 million investment by Digital Sky Technologies.

With this fresh investment, Facebook has a bigger valuation than companies like Boeing or Time Warner.

Yet its annual revenue, primarily based on advertising, is estimated at $2 billion, compared with Boeing's $64.62 billion and Time Warner's $26.5 billion.

Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has so far resisted pressure to launch an initial public offering of stock in the Palo Alto, California-based company. The 26-year-old was recently named Time magazine's "Person of the Year." (report from Agence France-Presse / Inquirer.net)

Maraming Salamat, Ginalyn Salazar at magkikita pa tayong muli!

KAJOYFULNESS PANANAW: Carnap dito, carnap doon

  • Una: sinusunog nila ang mga kotse;
  • Pangalawa: tinatanggal ang plaka ng kotse;
  • Pangatlo: dinis-assemble ang mga parte ng kotse;
  • Pang-apat: ibinibenta ang mga parte ng sasakyan sa talyer;

KC Ryan Sayon, kumpirmadong 'demure girl'

"She's coming back in a big way. We're finishing the year with her. She's coming back for five episodes at the end of the year. She's gonna be great,” ani Ryan Murphy na creator ng “Glee.”

"Charice is awesome, we love her. We can't wait till she comes back," ani Kevin McHale na creator din ng “Glee.”

"A little bit of drama, but nothing serious, they're still going strong,” kuwento ni Ushkowitz.

"Jenna has a really cute song that she sings for me that I think people will love,” lahad naman ni Shum.

"Our next episode is the big Superbowl episode...It's really big. We're dancing, we're on the football, there's zombie make-up, there's people being shot out of the cannon. People are gonna love it," patikim ni Amber Railey.

(report from Yong Chavez, ABS-CBN News North America Bureau)

Jericho Rosales on Cesca Litton: ‘Nagsisimula kami ng friendship na maganda’

MANILA, Philippines - Some of Jericho Rosales and Cesca Litton’s friends are hoping that they would get back together as a couple this year.

They said that it’s not impossible since the two have started communicating again a few months after their breakup in September.

But when asked if they’re open to a reconciliation, Jericho insisted that he and Cesca are better off as friends for now.

Ang importante para sa akin we’re okay at nagsisimula kami ng friendship na maganda,” said Jericho in an interview with Push.com.ph last January 11.

Jericho further shared that he even greeted Cesca during her birthday almost two weeks ago.

“You know, nahanap ko talaga yung mabuting kaibigan kay Cesca. And I’m so proud and I’m so happy na ganon din ang tingin niya sa akin. I’m very blessed to have her in my life. Right now, she's a very good friend and I wish her all the best. She's a beautiful person inside out, pero at the moment [siguro hanggang dun lang muna].”

With all the things he wants accomplish in his acting and singing career, Jericho claimed that finding a new love is the least of his priorities.

Hence, he doesn’t really expect to have someone special to celebrate the upcoming month of hearts.

“Huwag muna, wala pa sa panahon. I have big plans for 2011. Wala muna sa listahan ko yun (love life). Magtratrabaho muna ako kasi I am praying for a lot of things this year. Kapag dumating, dumating.

Jericho also felt recharged because he was able to spend time with his family and do some surfing during the holiday break.

“Medyo malamig [ang Pasko] and medyo antok ako kasi nag-taping ako nung December 23 tapos after that responsibilities pa—bili ng regalo, attend ng parties…kaya medyo pagod ako nung Pasko and New Year. But I was with my family kaya enjoy. (report from Rachelle Siazon, Push.com.ph)

(report from Bernie Franco, Push.com.ph)

Jason Francisco doesn’t want to do a love scene with Melai Cantiveros

MANILA, Philippines - Push.com.ph arrived at the look test for the upcoming teleserye Precious Hearts Romances presents Mana Po and saw Jason Francisco and Melai Cantiveros rehearsing an intimate scene.

In an interview after the rehearsal, Jason shared that the directors want to prepare him and Melai for numerous scenes in the teleserye wherein they have to act sweet and very much in love.

He also revealed that there were plenty of times during the rehearsal that he and Melai would just burst to laughter.

Jason and Melai fell in love when they were housemates in Pinoy Big Brother Double Up.

After the reality show, the two became an instant showbiz love team, attracting legions of fans not just in the Philippines but also abroad.

Push.com.ph asked Jason if he is ready to do a sexy or love scene with Melai for Mana Po, given that PHR material is known for its daring theme.

But Jason explained that he wants to maintain the wholesome image that his love team with Melai had built.

Proof that Jason and Melai have earned worldwide support is that whenever they would appear for a show either in the province or abroad, thousands of Kapamilya fans would flock to see them.

Though it had been almost a year after they left PBB, Jason and Melai consider it a blessing that their fans are still there.

At patuloy pa silang dumadami.

Jason also talked about how fans would show their love and support for them by giving expensive gifts.

The young lad from Mindoro never had to save up money so he could buy himself high tech gadgets.

The fans have given him gifts like an iPod, DSLR camera, and the Blackberry phone that he now uses.

(report from Napoleon Quintos, Push.com.ph)

Karylle opens up about rumored boyfriend Yael Yuzon

Mayroong ibang showbiz commitment si Karylle that day kaya si Yael muna ang sumalang to judge.

Masaya lang, parang for now it’s a bit fun to just enjoy things this way, tuksuhan lang sa Showtime ganun. Masaya lang ako, yung mga biruan na ganyan part of the bonding of the cast,” dagdag pa ni Karylle.

“Very brave, very sweet. Mag-bestfriend kasi kami.

(report from James Cantos, Push.com.ph)

Lenovo creates separate unit for tablets, phones

SAN FRANCISCO — Lenovo Group, the world's fourth-largest personal computer maker, expects the market for tablet computers and other mobile and Internet-connected devices to expand so rapidly that it is creating a product group devoted solely to these products.

The company, which is based in Beijing and has US headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina, said Tuesday that its new mobile Internet and digital home division will focus on creating tablets, smart phones and Web-connected home electronics, such as television sets.

Given the enormous popularity of Apple Inc.'s iPad, which was released last April, analysts expect tablet sales to jump this year. Technology research firm Gartner Inc. expects that 55 million tablet computers will be shipped this year, most of them still iPads, but there will be room for rivals to vie for sales of the remaining 10 million to 15 million devices.

The iPad wasn't the first tablet to hit the market — Lenovo and others have long offered laptops with swiveling screens that can also function as tablets, for example. But with its sleek design, focus on multimedia and price tag that can be as low as $499, the iPad was the first that managed to catch on with consumers. Now, major names including Lenovo, Motorola Mobility Inc. and Toshiba Corp. are releasing their own tablets with expectations that the category will finally take off this year.

Plenty of these were on display earlier this month at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. They include one from Lenovo, called the LePad, that runs Google Inc.'s Android operating software. When combined with a keyboard dock, the tablet becomes a laptop computer running Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 7 PC software. The LePad and dock — the combo is called the IdeaPad U1 — are set to roll out in China during the first quarter; Lenovo has not said if and when the product will come to the US.

Lenovo's new unit will be headed by Liu Jun, who has been responsible for product development as the head of Lenovo's product group. Peter Hortensius, who had run the company's Think product group, is taking Jun's old post.

Hortensius said Friday that the company decided to split tablets, smart phones and other Web-centric mobile and home devices into their own group so there is a clear focus on these electronics at Lenovo's senior level. The products seem different enough from PCs that it is worth focusing on them separately, he said.

In the US, consumers will mostly see tablets coming out of this business unit at first, he said.

While the iPad was the first to crack the tablet code with consumers, Lenovo, like many other companies, is confident that there's room for other tablets, too. Hortensius expects there to be a "lot of winners and losers" in the market this year.

"This is definitely going to be a very important year in tablets," he said. (report from Rachel Metz, AP)

Star Power finalists wish to join showbiz

MANILA, Philippines - The remaining five finalists of ABS-CBN's talent show "Star Power: Sharon’s Search for Next Female Pop Star," hosted by Megastar Sharon Cuneta, are one in saying that they want to join the world of show business.

In an interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com, the Star Power 5, namely Akiko Solon, K-La Rivera, Monica Sacay, Angeline Quinto and Krissel Valdez, revealed their reasons why they want to become stars.

"Aside from singing, gusto ko ding mag-acting, gusto ko ding mag-dancing," said Akiko, the "Sweet and Sexy Siren of Cebu."

Akiko added that, win or lose, she wouldn’t have any regret.

For Monica, she admitted that she's not good at acting but she is open to giving it a try.

And I want to experience it," the "Charming Biritera of Leyte" said.

Monica, who used to sing for weddings, also said that she doesn’t fear criticisms, saying it will help her improve her craft.

Krissel, The "Soulful Diva of Davao," said that, for her, acting is like singing.

She said: "Kung hindi ka marunong umarte hindi mo mae-express ang kanta mo. Like sila Sarah Geronimo, mas madali silang umarte kapag musician ka, maraming emotions. So kung may opportunities, go na go talaga."

For K-La, the "R&B Sweetheart from Canada," she also wants to host shows like her idol, Cuneta.

"Ako din po, siguro isang araw po I'd like to try din acting din po, at hosting and dancing. Lahat po kasi it's all art. I love art, like music,” said K-La.

Like most members of the group, Angeline also loves to act.

"Opo kasi talagang gusto ko po itong ginagawa," said the "Pop Belter of Manila."

The grand finalists also divulged their favorite actors and their "dream leading men."

K-La dreams to be paired with Sam Milby; Akiko, Derek Ramsay or John Lloyd Cruz; Monica, John Lloyd Cruz or Richard Poon; Krisell, John Lloyd or Piolo Pascual; and Angeline, Aga Muhlach.

The Star Power finalists are gearing up for the much-awaited grand finals on February 20. (report from Reyma Buan-Deveza, abs-cbnNEWS.com)
